Under beautiful sunny blue skies, the entire student body gathered with Diocesan and school leaders to break ground on the $6.6 million expansion project for our new athletic and performance facility. The 21,800 square-foot Fulford Athletic & Activity Complex will include a full-size court and two cross courts in the expanded gymnasium, seating for more than 720 spectators, men's and women's locker rooms for home and visiting teams, and offices. It will also feature a full-size stage for student performances and school-wide events. The new complex will nearly triple the size of the current gymnasium.

The ceremony was presided over by Bishop Peter Jugis, who invited all to "pray for God's help... that He will bring this project to a successful completion and that His protection will keep those who work on it safe from injury."
"The work we are beginning today should enliven our faith and make us grateful, said Bishop Jugis. "Whenever we look to the interests of our neighbor or the community and serve them, we are in a sense God’s own co-workers."

Gratitude and joy were the prevailing themes of the day. Dr. Semmler kicked off the ceremony by thanking those in attendance and acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the donors, Diocesan leaders, and the Catholic Schools Office in making this project possible.
“I am so grateful to all the people who have assisted us to reach this day,” echoed Dr. Gregory Monroe, Catholic Schools Superintendent. “I have no doubt that this new building, once erected, will be a reflection of the perfection student-athletes seek and will be training grounds for great victories in the years to come. But, more importantly, it will be about the virtue that is cultivated – and the formation that these student-athletes receive in fortitude, tenacity, and courage, and collegiality when they come together in teamwork."

Donors were represented at the event by the Capital Campaign committee members. Adam Bowman, Committee Co-Chair, spoke at the event. "Through the countless hours of work and dedication by so many, we are here today to celebrate another milestone for Christ the King Catholic High School and our community. The journey that brings us here today actually started back in 2016, when our current students were in elementary and middle school. Over these past five years, I’ve been inspired and overwhelmed by the support of this community. Despite being a young school and relatively small in numbers, we had a palpable spirit that helped us surpass many of the goals set early in this process. Even during challenging times, particularly since early 2020, the leadership from the Diocese, the Catholic Schools Office, and our administration worked tirelessly to help make this project a reality. And for that, we as a community are eternally thankful. This project is an investment in the future of CTK, and will be a foundation for Catholic education in our area for many years to come."

“This long-awaited project is representative of our CTK community in so many ways," commented Dr. Semmler. "The collaborative work and generosity of so many have led us to this moment.
“The 250 families who pledged and donated to this project include alumni, current and future families of CTK students. Their generosity has been overwhelming and humbling. We are truly blessed."

A capital campaign, launched in May 2019, raised more than $3.96 million in local school community pledges. The project is supplemented by $2.64 million in Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools funding. Construction is expected to begin in January and is expected to take 10-12 months.
